Joseph Wayas was a renowned Nigerian politician who served as the country's Senate President from 1979 to 1983, during the Second Nigerian Republic. Born on May 21, 1941, in Obanliku, Cross River State, Wayas had a


distinguished career in politics and public service.


Early Life and Education

Wayas attended Dennis Memorial Grammar School in Onitsha and later studied at various institutions in the United Kingdom, including the Higher Tottenham Technical College, West Bromwich College of Commerce, Science and Technology, and Aston University in Birmingham.


Political Career

Before becoming Senate President, Wayas worked as a manager and controller for several companies in Nigeria and the UK from 1960 to 1969. He then joined the Federal Government in 1969 and served as Commissioner for Transport in the South-Eastern State from 1972 to 1974. Wayas was also a member of the Constituent Assembly from 1977 to 1978.


Achievements as Senate President

During his tenure as Senate President, Wayas maintained an excellent relationship with President Shehu Shagari, ensuring smooth passage of bills. He also played a key role in promoting Nigeria's leadership role in Africa.


Later Life and Legacy

After leaving office, Wayas went into exile following the military coup in 1983. He returned to Nigeria in 1987 and was detained for a year. Later, he became a member of the All People's Party and subsequently joined the Peoples Democratic Party in 2001. Wayas was a strong advocate for true federalism as the solution to Nigeria's democratic problems.


Awards and Recognition

In recognition of his contributions to Nigerian politics, Wayas was awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) in 2010.
